March is National Ladder Safety Month; OSHA Symposium

Thursday, February 23, 2017

Every year, falls from ladders account for about 20,000 injuries and 300 deaths. However, falls from ladders are preventable with the correct safety planning, training, and proper ladder usage. In conjunction with the American Ladder Institutes declaration of March as National Ladder Safety Month, OSHA will be hosting a safety symposium on March 2, 2017 at the OSHA Education Center at the University of Texas, Arlington. The safety discussion, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., will be live-streamed and can be viewed here. OSHA area directors Jack Rector and Basil Singh will be discussing lessons learned from the field as well as three simple steps to help prevent falls from ladders:

  1. Plan ahead to get the job done safely.
  2. Provide the right ladder for the job with proper load capacity.
  3. Train workers to use ladders safely.

Ladder safety will also be an important element of OSHA’s annual National Safety Stand-Down set for May 8-12.
