NIOSH App to Measure Sound Levels

Tuesday, January 31, 2017

NIOSH recently released a new mobile app, The NIOSH Sound Level Meter, designed to measure sound levels in the workplace. The app, available for iOS devices, provides noise exposure metrics that are of “importance for proper occupational noise measurements,” NIOSH stated in a Jan. 17 NIOSH Science Blog post.

NIOSH intends for the app to be used as a practical tool to collect noise exposure data, to help workers make informed decisions about potential hazards to hearing, and to eventually become a research tool.

Here are the specifics of the app:

  • Reports instantaneous sound levels in A, C, or Z-weighted decibels
  • The app is not intended to replace professional sound level meters or dosimeters and is not intended to be used for compliance, NIOSH cautions
  • NIOSH recommends using app with an external microphone and acoustical calibrator
