Alternative Fuel Compatibility in Underground Storage Tanks (USTS)

Ethanol-blended gasoline has been around for a number or years.  Typically, the blend ratio is 1:10, or less (<10% ethanol).  E15 (15% ethanol) will soon be offered and fuels such as E85 (85% ethanol) have been offered in the past few years.  Biodiesel has also been offered with increasing frequency.  These types of fuels are collectively called biofuels.

Since these fuels have been offered, some problems with storage tank material and biofuel interaction have been observed.  New regulations will require owners and operators to demonstrate compatibility of their UST systems with the fuels stored.  If you are changing fuel types in a tank this will also be important.  The USEPA offers information regarding compatibility of these fuels at:
